Don’t charge your escooter overnight or when no one is home. Scooters aren’t very easy to secure, so it probably goes without saying that they’re very easy to steal. Extreme heat and extreme cold are not good for batteries. Check the manufacturer’s servicing and repair options. Before you invest in a new scooter, check if the manufacturer offers spare parts or is able to service your scooter if any issues arise. These vehicles can go pretty fast, and you don’t need to go more than 20 mph to be in a serious accident. Try to avoid the rain. It’s also a good idea to check the weight limit on your scooter. The manuals of several scooters I’ve tested say the same. Don’t store your escooter in excessive temperatures. Roll them indoors if you need to, but keep them within sight if you don’t want to walk home, helmet in hand. One rider only, please. Not every battery or charger has a UL certification for safety, and I’ve seen one too many stories of battery fires. More importantly, do not plug the charger in without wiping down the charging port and ensuring that it’s dry. You may want to connect with local ebike and escooter shops to see if they have experience with the brand you’re going with. Unless a manufacturer explicitly states that an escooter can carry two people, only one rider should be on the deck. Don’t leave your escooter unattended outdoors. You’ll want to check your scooter to see whether it has official IP water- and dust-resistance ratings. Store your escooter indoors in a cool, dry place, like you would your breakfast cereal! Always be around when you’re charging your scooter and unplug it when it’s finished charging. If there is a rating, it’s still a good idea to get out of the rain quickly. If not, avoid riding in the rain.
Scooters are electric vehicles, so there are a few things you should and shouldn’t do if you get one. If so, what’s the max speed limit? Do you have to be in the bike lane? Protect your noggin. Our Biking Accessories guide has some helmet options-my personal favorite is the Thousand Heritage helmet-and follow this guide to fit your helmet the right way. Wear a helmet. Need I say more? Chances are your state or city has spelled out rules about riding them. Over the past two years, escooters have become a common sight in many cities. First, if you’ve never ridden an electric scooter and are nervous about shelling out for one, try a rideshare service. Are electric scooters legal where you live? Companies like Lime, Lyft, and Bird let you grab an escooter for not a lot of money, which is a good way to test the waters. Check your local laws.
There are two types of systems: band and disk. Disk brakes: The best electric scooter will most likely have a disk-brake system, or v-brakes, on both the front and rear. All types of band brakes have this downside, especially front band brakes since they can lock up the front tire. How much your battery-powered scooter weighs matters because you may have to carry it around at some point. You can get them with just one brake, but these don’t stop as quickly. It’s also hard on the wheels. You typically brake the front wheel using a control on the handlebar and step on a little pad on the back to stop the rear wheel. Having two brakes gives you much more control. You’ll go over the handlebars if you aren’t prepared. Band brakes often lock up the wheels, instead of gradually slowing down, which can be dangerous if you’re going at a fast speed.
Despite the heavy battery and slightly chunky look, it only weighs 52 pounds and has a compact folding design. Lightweight foldable scooters are ideal for commuters. Weight varies; you’ll find scooters around 20 pounds or so, all the way up to 60 pounds. These include but are not limited to: wear a helmet, keep your eyes on the road, equip proper lighting. The heavier you are, the more energy the scooter uses. Electric scooters can handle a range of rider weights, depending on who they are designed for. A max of 220 pounds is on the lighter side, but fairly common. Are electric scooters safe? They fold up to a good size and can be carried unto public transport or put into a car trunk. A heavyweight can reduce the scooter’s top speed and range, so bear that in mind when making a selection. Yes, electric scooters are safe to use as long as you follow the common safety advice. In general, the more powerful the motor and battery, the heavier the scooter, so bear that in mind if you want a high-performance battery scooter.
